PSA and Opt In/Out

Billy has taken his pop culture skill! What that means is that he may recognize characters from Western TV shows and movies (especially science fiction and fantasy), book characters by name only, and comic book stuff that isn't Marvel. Billy's knowledge is very up to date, and he knows all kinds of obscure things. For anime/manga, he'll know the popular stuff, but probably not recognize more obscure things.

Opt In/Out Part:
Option 1 - Total Opt Out (Billy will never recognize your character)
Option 2 - Total Opt In (Everything up to 4th walling is cool)
Option 3 - Middle Ground (This is where dropping a comment would be awesome)

I'm imaging middle ground as being anything from it's cool to recognize characters but not 4th wall them or tell them about their future . . . to it's okay if Billy knows them, but never ever mention it to them. If I hear nothing from you, I'm assuming a total opt out. Either way, I will always ask before I do anything and please poke me if I go beyond what you're comfortable with by accident.

Opt 2. I've already enabled other people and Dick's already aware in some universes, he's a comic book character (or some version him, he thinks).

Chances are if there are Batman references, there's a franchise somewhere...

DC drops mentions of Marvel all the time, so I just assume that the treat each other like comics in their comics. Hurhur.

If it helps, all the people who've recognized Dick as Dick Grayson the first Robin haven't really known that he grew up to become Nightwing and then Batman because that tends to be the impression of people who DON'T read a bunch of DC comics. Sooo...

YEAH, OKAY, I'M GONNA MESS WITH HICCUP, if you want to mess with him.

Option 3? He can find out he's a movie/TV show thing and can spoil some things, but I'd like to keep major spoilers a ~secret~ because memories and such. Things like villains, false deaths (Alvin is a cockroach), people leaving. Basically stuff that'd actually hit him hard emotionally for personal reasons instead of just apparently being a TV character somewhere.

I SHOULD SAY THE FIRST MOVIE IS A-OK TO SPOIL as Hiccup would pretty much not be surprised by anything he doesn't remember directly already. Mostly the series and second movie that is full of surprises.

Probably option 3! I would prefer not to break the 4th wall from Katniss' point of view but if he wants to recognize her (and not share) that's fine!

Morning Glories is not a super popular comic, but if you think Billy would have read it that's totally cool with me and I'm opting in to whatever!

He can totally recognise Eliot if he'd know Leverage and I don't mind him telling Eliot whatever. It's not sci fi but it's definitely a genre show and the target audience is pretty similar I think. He's also welcome to recognise him as looking like an older version of that one dude on Angel...

Nia is fine because it's Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and she'll honestly just think they broke the fourth wall with their hotblood or something tbh

Nagisa is also fine! Though her anime is somewhat obscure in the grand scheme of things so. \o

Tavros is fine too because breaking the fourth wall is totally a thing Homestuck does anyway, though I dunno Billy vs. Webcomics at all.

Oh and mentioning it to them is completely fine, too!

If you think he'd recognize a reasonably obscure YA/fantasy series he's free to recognize Josh! No idea whether he would, though.

For Van, I'm going to have to request a Total Opt Out since he would noooot react well to the idea that he's from a work of fiction due to all his issues with free will and predetermination. Not that it's likely that Billy would know the Tales of series in-depth enough to recognize him, but Abyss did get an anime adaption that is going to be rereleased in the US so I'd rather play it safe and make sure it's clear that it'll be Bad News now before it could potentially become an issue. ^^;

For Sophie(/[personal profile] firstflower); Tales of Graces slipped under the radar a bit more and there's no anime adaption so it's definitely towards the obscure end, but I'm cool with Billy saying she looks like an anime character because she does walk around with insanely long purple pigtails and...looks pretty anime character-ish.

Option 2 is fine! Leto is a book character from DUUUUUUUUUNE which is an award winning series/big sci-fi thing and Inigo is from Fire Emblem which is pretty popular right now, but he's probably not that well known.

I don't know if Billy would know Fate specifically but if he might know Cu Chulainn for whatever reason you have all permissions for pretty much anything for him.

total opt out for thorfinn [personal profile] karlsefni mostly bc he cant even grasp that idea and that overcomplicates things in ways i would like not to happen, tho his series is being published by kodansha it might be obscure enough

total opt in for aradia [personal profile] froggered bc fourth walling is always a thing and unsurprising, tho what debs said about billy knowing webcomics (tho homestuck IS pretty popular so)

total opt out for kirito [personal profile] knighttolast until he (very unlikely) find out he's a computer program, diece is really obscure tho

Honestly, Elan's/[personal profile] trope_attack own universe breaks the fourth wall, so you can't possibly do worse. So I'd say 3, with the caveat of 'try not to mention anything that Elan hasn't remembered yet', and especially things Elan wouldn't know even with all memories. OotS is a webcomic, but it's popular as webcomics go.

Velma is a public figure in her homeworld, generally is used to interdimensional weirdness, and has enough memories that mentioning her should be fine. I can think of one spoiler that she hasn't remembered yet. But, this time, you have semi-obscure superhero fiction published first online, then by a small press, though the author is reasonably well known.

A good rule of thumb is to avoid significant memories unless I've gotten them.

I have no idea what Billy's status is with video games/JRPGs in particular, but it's fine to recognize whatever about Maribelle (who is from Fire Emblem). She'll brush it off pretty easily.

And my other character is technically a canonmate, so not applicable.

[personal profile] myfreeheart 2014-06-13 03:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Going to opt out for Colette. She'd stepford smile pretty much for the rest of forever :(. Especially considering the anime ramps the drama up to 11.

Pitch/Raenef will be a total opt out (though I doubt billy would have read Demon Diary :\a)

Karigan's also a total opt out (again not really a series that many folks would know).

Spitfire is probably the most recognizable and I'm kind of wavering on the "all in" and "middle ground" for him. There's definitely some interesting tidbits that could be dropped, and since he has all his own memories back, he could probably handle most of them. Feeling it out will probably be best on this one.

Jack/Corvus I'm gonna say middle ground! Recognizing that he's from a book is fine and mentioning it to him should be cool too if it ever comes up, but I'd like to avoid in-depth spoilers about his life or anything too 4th wall. He is from a YA series called GONE and it's from the guy who did Animorphs with his wife so Billy might at least recognize that!

Shirayuki/Apple is from a slightly obscure shoujo manga and I don't know if he would recognize her at all anyways, so I'll say opt out for her.

Option 3 for Eren! He's the main character of a popular manga/anime and Billy's free to recognise him as such, but I'd prefer no spoilers about significant events in his canon.
